Brian West is a lifelong resident of Savannah and a 13-year resident of Tybee. Brian and his wife Becky owned and operated the physical therapy group West Rehab Services in the Savannah Market for 28 years, selling the company to CORA Physical Therapy in 2018. They spent their teen summers on Tybee’s Island, then called Savannah Beach. They have three adult children, three guardian children who are now adults, and three absolutely adorable grandchildren. They also have a cat. They live on the beach side of Butler on 10th Street.Brian earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration, and Doctor of Healthcare Administration. He attended Calvary Day School, the University of Georgia, and Georgia Southern University. He was also the Program Director and Assistant Professor for the Healthcare Administration program at South University. Becky is a physical therapist wheelchair evaluations and home care for West Physical Therapy.Brian has had an interest in politics for many years. Over a 20-year period, he served as Treasurer and President for Forest Cove, a 210-home community in the Georgetown area of south Savannah. He also served as Treasurer and President of his children’s’ high school athletic association. He enjoys meeting and working with friends and neighbors to accomplish community goals.Brian stated, “I am interested in working with Tybee residents to address concerns like the short-term vacation rental population, providing positive experiences for residents and visitors, ensuring our investment in infrastructure is sufficient, and reducing clutter.” He went on to say that he likes to make data-based decisions. “Significant changes require significant research.” Brian looks forward to working with and addressing the concerns of Tybee residents. STR

In 2021 I wrore: "I hope we can all agree that there are valid arguments for and against STVR properties on Tybee. We need to work together on a solution that addresses all the concerns. Those affected include investors who do not live here (and never intend to live here) and operate STVRs, investors who do live here and operate STVRs, people that have STVRs in their own home, real estate organizations that operate STVRs, our businesses, our code enforcement, and our property values. The solution presented does not solve any of these concerns. We need to quantify the outcomes". Our city council crafted STR ordinances that permit STR use while restricting future growth of STR's in residential zones. Tybee is made up of neighborhoods with differing atmospheres - some are traditional family and retirement communities, others are more heavily infiltrated with tourists in the summer months. I believe we should respect residents on both sides of the STR debate- those who do not want them in their neighborhoods, and those that do.

Ordinance development

Our ordinance development process could be better. When ideas for change move to the top of our community concerns, I would like to see a process where we engage community members affected by the change to explore all solutions. Give everyone a portal for input and evaluate all the ideas. We should also research the issue using scientific methods and peer-reviewed studies and publications. We should compare ourselves to other communities with similar problems. Then allow City Council to review the information and create an ordinance and/or educational materials for the community. Every council person should be involved in the discussion, without recusal. Then, when an ordinance develops that every council person can support, vote with appropriate recusals.
